Two Cornish boardsports enthusiasts will be heading to Singapore to compete in the World FlowRider®Championships this October after securing victory in the first ever European FlowRider Championships, held at the Loop complex at Cornwall’s Retallack Resort & Spa on Saturday (4th September).

Morwenna Berry, who lives near Watergate Bay, took first place in the female flowboard category, earning herself an all expenses paid trip to the international finals where she’ll face the most talented riders from Asia, South Africa, Chile and the USA. She’ll be sharing a flight with Newquay-based taxi driver Andrew Hill, a regular visitor to Retallack, who took the top spot in the bodyboard category.

In the men’s flowboard event the competition was fierce with a stand out performance from North Cornwall’s Luke Hopper who made it through to the final against seasoned flowboarder Quincy Vlijtig from Holland. Earlier in the day top European riders such as Andreas Losbjer from Sweden and Holland’s Max Walraven had set the tempo high and there were also impressive displays of skill from the rest of the UK contingent – including surfing champion Ben Skinner who progressed into the top 10 and North Cornwall’s  Gethin Walters who took fourth. It was Vlijtig that ultimately stole the show however, executing advanced skateboarding-style manoeuvres in the final against Hopper such as double kickflips, varial flips and 360 shove-its to the delight of the more than 150-strong crowd.

“The standard of the competition has been amazing,” said head judge and flowriding World Champion Greg Lazarus who had flown in from the States especially. “The UK is new to flowriding but already we are seeing an enormous amount of talent and everyone has really upped their game for this event. The atmosphere has been incredible and I really think the European and UK riders really are a force to be reckoned with.”

New European Female Champion Morwenna Berry added, “It’s an unbelievable feeling to be going to the World Championships and I can’t wait to see all the other riders in action. FlowRiding is really growing in popularity so it’s going to be great seeing it all progress. Everyone here has been really supportive and I’m just blown away to have won. It’s awesome.”
