Is Newquay Wilder Than Ibiza? What Do You Think?

Newquay

Another great piece of journalism from 'The Sun' came about this week, comparing it against San Antonio, the party town in Ibiza. Often in the news for all of the wrong reasons this is just what Newquay didn't need, we're interested to find out what you think!? Below is a section of the article

By day, it is an attractive resort, noted for its sandy beaches and surfing and alive with mini-golf, bowling greens and ice cream parlours. But when darkness falls, it takes a seedy turn.

In these tough economic times, and with the euro stronger than ever against the Pound, it is now gaining a name for itself as the new Ibiza - a place where youngsters flock for cheap booze, endless bar crawls and sex on the beach. And we don't mean the famous cocktail.

Where once they hopped on cheap flights to Spain, gangs of drunken girls and boys now roam Newquay's bars and clubs, too often ending the night in the gutter or shovelling fast food down their necks.

The resort - once best known as a quiet fishing town and still with a population of only 20,000 or so - is serviced by 27 bars and clubs whose tills ring non-stop throughout the summer season.

Last year 6,500 unaccompanied 16 to 18-year-olds from across the UK descended in the first three weeks of July, turning Newquay into a scaled-down British version of Ibiza clubbing capital San Antonio....

Is Newquay wilder than Ibiza? In my personal view, I would say its very much the same for wildness as Ibiza, Magaluf, Ayanapa, etc. Where there is cheap alcohol and clubs trying to out-do each other on the promotions, there will be people that like to take it way too far. The article seems to make it out that Newquay is a hot spot for clubbing, however, if this was so, why would Pure be shutting down due to not enough custom? I been on a night out in Newquay and ít truely is nothing special.

It mentions the deaths of two youth, which is sad, however, not too disimilar to Ibiza's death toll due to the same reasons. Also too often we hear of people dying on nights out in Newquay due to fights, which of course would be largely due to drinking too much. Everyone has a limit and it is stupidity to push them, it won't make the night any better, but is infact more likely to make it worse. I am not against drinking, but everyone should drink in moderation.

It doesn't matter where you go clubbing, there will always be those that push the limits. Some places around the world are better than others to go clubbing (USA and Germany, being two of the best, in my view) but people still drink too much in both places, but the standards are higher due to more enforced drink controll, door policy, dress code and in the USA's case, the age limits to go clubbing are strongly set to 21 and over.

The clubs etc are closing down because most of the drinking happens on the street, with cheap booze often bought by parents, and underage drinkers.
Another problem is that most of the 'revellers' are underage and using fake id (passports that have been doctered). Bouncers,Doormen and Bartenders etc. need to be more vigil especially as young girls seem to be able to get away with it very easily (I have 2 sons of 23 & 25 who find that their Id is studied, my 23 yr old was even asked his Birth Sign!! as a way to catch him out!! even though he presented his Driving Licence, and while the Doorman was questioning him, the girls in the queue were casually 'nodded' in!!!!)
i have nieces and nephews (we live in cornwall) so hear a lot about what goes on and most of the drinking takes place outside the bars and clubs often in the carpark, and most of the id's are fake!!!!!
i have a son (25) in the royal navy, he and his friends were planning on a weekend of surfing during summer leave, but decided it was too risky.
Its such a shame that families, and young people who are just out to enjoy themselves without drinking themselves sick are being affected by a few (well more than a few, actually) idiots.

Nate Valentino,

are you a sensationalist journalist too?

"Also too often we hear of people dying on nights out in Newquay due to fights"

the last time somebody "died on a night out in Newquay due to a fight" was in 2006 - whilst tragic, it was an isolated incident.

Newquay is one of the safest places to live and visit in the Country, in-spite of sensationalist drivel like this. There are so many holes in this "story" it's like a fishing net.

"i have nieces and nephews (we live in cornwall) so hear a lot about what goes on"

I think people in Cornwall need to take a look at what goes on on their own doorstep (take a look at the crime figures for Truro, Falmouth, St. Austell, Penzance, Bodmin, Camborne, Redruth, and compare them to Newquay with it's massive summer population), before they start [filtered word]ging Newquay off based on what they "hear", or read in the papers!

I'd rather stick needles in my eyes than go to Newquay in the summer
