Cornwall Sustainability Awards open for 2010

Environmentally friendly and sustainable businesses from across Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly can now apply to enter the 2010 Cornwall Sustainability Awards 2010.

Companies will be able to compete in six categories including Best Managed Company, Low Carbon Business, Resource Management, Products and Services, Best Individual and for the first time, Sustainable Construction.

The closing date for entries is Friday, September 24.

Tom Flannigan, Cornwall Council’s Corporate Director for Environment, Planning and Economy, said: “Now in its eighth year the Cornwall Sustainability Awards are more relevant than ever as the county has an impressive reputation for sustainable practices throughout the UK, whether that’s low-carbon housing, manufacturing, tourism or renewable energy development.

“The Awards not only recognise the great achievements of homegrown businesses but send out a strong message about Cornish ingenuity and innovation.

“These awards have a phenomenal track record of success in highlighting the best managed businesses operating in the area, with a large number of our winners going on to be highlighted as national exemplars within their sectors.”

The six categories are:

Best Managed Company (Small, Medium and Large) sponsored by the Manufacturing Advisory Service in the South West (MAS-SW), Combined Universities in Cornwall (CUC), and St Austell Brewery

Low Carbon Business sponsored by Environmental Skills Network

Resource Management sponsored by Groundwork Trust

Products and Services sponsored by Oxford Innovation

Best Individual sponsored by the Energy & Environment Group (Wardell Armstrong International)

Sustainable Construction sponsored by the European Social Fund Construction Sector Group

Overall Winner Award sponsored by Business Link and chosen from the other category winners

Since 2002 the Cornwall Sustainability Awards has given trophies to and acknowledged hundreds of Cornish businesses both large and small and as diverse as breweries, printers, clothing manufacturers and even an abattoir.

Last year’s Overall winner was St Austell Brewery. James Staughton, managing director of St Austell Brewery, said: “St Austell Brewery is committed to going that extra mile to minimise the environmental impact of our business.

“Being named Overall Winner at last year’s Cornwall Sustainability Awards provided welcome recognition and a fantastic boost to our environmental strategy.

“We’re proud to be doing our bit to protect the unique and beautiful environment in this part of the world and we aim to become one of the UK’s greenest brewers.”

Winners will be announced at an awards ceremony taking place on Friday, December 3 at the Pavilion Centre, Royal Cornwall Showground.
