Jubilee Sessions Success; Bloc Party Review From Saturday

The second round of Jubilee Sessions at the Jubilee Pool on Saturday night continued to be a popular choice, despite a number of other events happening in the Penzance area due to the Bank Holiday Weekend. Hundreds descended on the pool, which has been recognised as the perfect venue for such an event.

The evening, which featured a DJ set from Bloc Party may have got off to a slower start than the first one but it was not long before the guests began to trickle, then pour in. Following on from the success of the previous event, all eyes were on this one to impress even further.

A DJ set from Bloc Party really energised the party atmosphere as people arrived and the sun went down. A positive element was that many of the tickets went to people that lived outside the Penzance area. There were attendees from the Truro, Helston, Camborne and Falmouth areas. One was on a surfing holiday with some friends. He was visiting from Croyde in Devon. After commenting on the excellent venue choice, he was keen to emphasise the fantastic atmosphere that he felt throughout the evening. Two friends from Shropshire and Wales also echoed his positivity.

The dancefloor was well and truly alive towards the end of the evening when Ry Spenceley, who was at the first event took to the decks. Sets from Louis and Dante Gabriel had also kept the dancefloor alive as night began to fall. With remixes of tracks that included the likes of The Eurythmics, The Beatles and Adele, the atmosphere was electric with the vast majority dancing the night away. The weather was also on its best behaviour with no signs of rain to dampen anyone’s spirits. Clear skies made a welcome change and as the sun went down and it started getting dark, the true meaning of what the event was about soon became apparent.

As with any event, there were both positive and negative reactions that followed and some took to social networking sites to air their views. However for every negative reaction there were more positive ones. The main concern for one guest was the change to the running order. She thought that putting Bloc Party on at the earlier time was not the wisest decision to make. However one attendee could not say enough good things about her experience. Writing on Facebook she said that having missed the first event that was free, she did not mind paying for this one as the atmosphere, lighting and DJ’s made it all worthwhile. Following on from that she recognised the importance that such an event has on Penzance as well as the positive effect it has on the town.

Guy Botterill, Senior Leisure Officer for Cornwall County Council also attended the sessions. He told me that the council are always looking at new ways of “keeping the pool alive” as it does not get used as much as it could for other events.

Having hosted two very popular nights already, the third and final installment of The Jubilee Sessions from The Zero Lounge looks set to impress even further. With DJ sets by Skully from Razorlight and and Rob Ackroyd from Florence + the Machine lined up, its success looks set to continue. Tickets for the third and final Jubilee Sessions taking place on Saturday 10 September are now on sale at The Zero Lounge or online at www.jubileesessions.eventbrite.com

This next session has been approved for 1,000 people with Jack Daniels providing a bar with prices at £2.50 for a single and mixer £3.50 double and mixer. Everyone purchasing a ticket and attending will automatically be entered in a prize draw to win a signed Jack Daniels guitar which will be presented on the night by Skully from Razorlight – we’ll even ask him and Rob (Florence and the Machine) to sign it.
