Wooden Waves Skate Park Reopens in Newquay

Wooden Waves, the famous Newquay skatepark, reopened on Sunday 24th July.

XtraVert - a local social enterprise - re-skinned the ramps and painted the entire park. This project was given a budget of up to £5,000 by Newquay Town Council. Investment from DC will follow shortly, as a result of exciting new links with international skate brands.  

The park will be fully opened and complete from Sunday 24 July - to coincide with the start of the school holidays. The launch included competitions for skaters, BMX riders and scooters, plus demos from local sponsored skaters.  

Despite its massive popularity with the local skate community, Wooden Waves has cost the ratepayers of Newquay a considerable amount of money for ongoing running and repair work and the Town Council is now investigating alternative business models. As a result, they have entered into a partnership with Xtravert, part of the social enterprise, Real Ideas Organisation, initially on a three month trial project.  

Throughout the six weeks of the summer holidays, there will be a nominal charge of £2 per day per person - only between the hours of 9am and 6pm. This income will contribute to the costs of the urgently needed rebuild - plus additional improvements such as a shop and on site staff including a first aider. Also throughout the summer, competitions with big name sponsors will run, plus graffiti demos and workshops and film nights.  A website and social media profiles are also under construction to allow better communication between the Wooden Waves community.    

XtraVert helps young people carve out careers in the carpentry industry and the XtraVert team build bespoke wooden commissions - including skate ramps and surf boards – and they will utilise their team's carpentry skills to maintain the park.

“Members of the XtraVert team have been working voluntarily on the park for a while now and we’re so excited to be given the opportunity to put our long-term ideas into practice. Wooden Waves is such a great park, loved by locals, but also we know that people travel from all over the country to ride here.  But it needs a serious rebuild - volunteers have been amazing and kept it going for a long time but we need to really invest in it. We’ve got amazing plans for it and can’t wait to reveal more in the coming weeks.”
